Stephen Boyd Elected as Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering


Stephen Boyd, ICME faculty member and Samsung Professor in the School of Engineering and Professor, by courtesy, of Computer Science and of Management Science and Engineering, was elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, along with 17 others, including Bill Gates.

The addition of the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2017 was formally launched at the beginning of the year. Through the two channels of nomination of academic groups and academicians nominated by the China Association for Science and Technology, a total of 533 valid candidates were nominated.

Of the 67 newly elected academicians, 63 are males, accounting for 94%; females are 4, accounting for 6%. The youngest age of 49 years, the maximum age of 67 years old, with an average age of 56.37 years. 57 people aged below 60 (inclusive), accounting for 85%; 10 persons aged 61 to 70 (inclusive), accounting for 15%; and more outstanding middle-aged and young engineering scientists were elected. Among the newly elected academicians, 31 are from institutions of higher learning, accounting for 46.2%; 18 are research institutes, accounting for 26.9%; 18 are enterprises and hospitals, accounting for 26.9%. A number of engineering and technical experts from enterprises and grass-roots organizations and outstanding experts who have been working in remote areas in western Xinjiang such as Xinjiang and Gansu were elected. The results of the election of foreign academicians have been synchronized. This time, a total of 18 foreign experts were elected as foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Through the addition of the current academicians, the age structure, discipline coverage and geographical distribution of the academicians in the Chinese Academy of Engineering will be further improved. This will be more conducive to giving play to the role of academician groups, promoting the development of engineering technology in China and encouraging the growth of outstanding talents. The building of a contingent of foreign academicians has taken a new stage and also laid a solid foundation for the future from the mechanism for the election of additional members. This will promote China's international exchanges and cooperation, enhance the influence of the institute in the international engineering science and technology circles, and build a world-class engineering institute to play a more active role.
