Meet Tim Baer, an incoming PhD student in ICME.

Academic and work experience

During my undergrad, I researched parallel graph algorithms from a linear algebra perspective. Then, I worked for a few years at a networking startup in the Bay area.

Inspiration for pursuing graduate degree in CME

I enjoyed working at a startup, but I missed the freedom to explore abstract problems from a long-term perspective. In addition, I have come to appreciate the research community’s inclusive culture with open access to papers and collaboration.

Specific research areas of interest

Broadly, I am interested in designing scalable algorithms for high-dimensional problems in scientific computing. I am especially interested in sampling from high-dimensional distributions, with applications to quantum circuit complexity and simulation.

Impact I hope to have in my field and the world

I would like to design algorithms that enable scientists in chemistry, materials science, and beyond to solve their most challenging problems. Along my journey, I have been fortunate to be guided by generous mentors and I hope to follow their example for a future generation of researchers.

Interests and hobbies

I have been exploring the wonderful road bike trails nearby. In addition, I am a big fan of Chicago sports, especially the Cubs.
