This newly published paper, with Stanford ICME PhD student Allison Koenecke as the lead author, finds that the technology that powers the nation’s leading automated speech recognition systems makes twice as many errors when interpreting words spoken by African Americans as when interpreting the same words spoken by whites. This work was overseen by ICME-affiliated Professor Sharad Goel of the Stanford Computational Policy Lab.
