Women in Data Science Conference @ Stanford University

The Global Women in Data Science (WiDS) Conference is happening at Stanford University on March 4, 2019. This annual one-day technical conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science research and applications in a broad set of domains. All genders are invited to participate in the conference, which features outstanding women doing outstanding work.

The WiDS conference will be held at the Arrillaga Alumni Center, 326 Galvez Street, on the Stanford University campus. The conference is expected to begin at 9:00 am, and run until 5:00 pm, including a 1 1/2 hour lunch session with breakouts, followed by a networking reception. More about WiDS

The Women in Data Science (WiDS) initiative began in November 2015 at Stanford University with the inaugural WiDS conference. Our goals were to inspire and educate participants, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. The inspiration and education is the result of featuring amazing female speakers doing outstanding work in the field, in a broad set of domains. In addition to the 400+ participants at Stanford for our inaugural conference, we discovered that 6,000+ people participated online. That made us realize that we had an opportunity for greater impact, worldwide. For our second conference, in February 2017, we went global, with 80+ regional events in 30+ countries.

The Global WiDS conference expanded even more in 2018, with 150+ regional events happening in 50+ countries. We also expanded the initiative with the inaugural WiDS Datathon, a predictive analytics challenge using data collected by InterMedia, a grant recipient of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in their Financial Services for the Poor program. WiDS Datathon participants numbered 1,000+, from 220+ teams, hailing from 26 countries.

Besides the in-person conference at Stanford, there are many ways to be a part of this global initiative

Become a WiDS Ambassador, and host a regional event

You can also organize a WiDS regional event to bring the conference to your cohort, colleagues, or community. Apply to become a WiDS ambassador, including signing the license agreement, and you can plan an event that coincides with the Global WiDS conference. Many regional events include local speakers, talking about their applications and research in multiple data science domains.

Participate in the next WiDS Datathon

Hone your data science skills with the WiDS Datathon, joining teams in a predictive analytics challenge focused on social impact. The WiDS Datathon will happen early in 2019, and winners will be announced at the March 4, 2019, Global WiDS Conference at Stanford. If you’d like to participate in the WiDS Datathon, sign up for our email list for WiDS datathon news and notifications.
