Students

Join us for a special Lunch & Learn featuring Stanford alum Jerry Watkins, MS ‘14 and PhD ‘17, a senior computational scientist in Sandia’s Quantitative & Modeling department. Jerry will share insights into his work at Sandia, discuss key research projects and computational tools, and walk us through his career journey from Stanford to Sandia. He’ll also give an overview of Sandia and offer valuable career tips for landing a job in the field. Whether you’re a master’s or PhD student, don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a scientist in the field and career paths at a leading national laboratory!

Please note that this workshop is only for graduate students of Stanford ICME, Dept. of Statistics and affiliated faculty. If you have any questions, please get in touch with ICME Career Services: Tanya Schornack.

Featured Speaker:

Jerry Watkins, MS '14, PhD '17 – Jerry is a computational scientist in the Quantitative Modeling & Software Engineering Department at Sandia National Laboratories. His research focuses on the modeling and simulation of complex physical phenomena in computational fluid dynamics. His expertise spans across multiple areas of research including numerical discretizations, solvers for nonlinear PDEs, high performance computing, and scientific software development. His current focus is on accelerating scientific discovery by improving model fidelity and performance in Earth system science and hypersonic reentry.

At Stanford, Jerry earned both his MS and PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics, with his dissertation focusing on Numerical Analysis and Implicit Time Stepping for High-Order Fluid Flow Simulations on GPU Architectures. A former ICME teaching assistant, Jerry remains actively engaged with the Stanford community, mentoring students through ICME's Xplore Research Program on ice-sheet modeling research.
