Paper Application
If you wish to request a paper application, submit an online request. Paper applications are processed directly by the Graduate Admissions Office from September through November only.
Please Note: You must send a check or money order for $20, made payable to Stanford University, with your request. All applicants must pay $20 (payable in US funds) to obtain a paper application, regardless of whether you are a US citizen/permanent resident or an international applicant.
Degree Programs
Applicants to the graduate program in iCME must apply either to the M.S. program or to the Ph.D. program, but not to both.
Every year a number of students from the iCME Masters program will qualify to enter the Ph.D. program by successfully completing the Ph.D. qualifying exams and aligning with a research advisor. Entering the M.S. program is by no means a guaranteed path to a Ph.D. in iCME, and subsequent admission into the Ph.D. program is far from assured. However, very strong students with insufficient background for Ph.D. admission may choose to enter the MS program to gain a thorough understanding of the core courses, to demonstrate academic potential at Stanford, and perhaps to align with a faculty member in research. All of these factors, along with passing the quals, can contribute to a strengthened application to a Ph.D. program at Stanford.
Admission to the Ph.D. program is much more competitive than to the M.S. program, so students interested primarily in a Masters degree should apply to the M.S. program.
Please refer to the Academic Programs section for more information.
HCP Applicants
Honors Cooperative Program (HCP) applicants are admitted to the program in all three quarters unlike the regular applicants to the program. Since "Apply Yourself", the application interface used by the University, can only process applications for a specific academic term, please choose the default admit term available in the on-line application and indicate the term you would like to be considered for admission in "Please include any questions or comments" section on page four of the on-line application. In addition you must e-mail your request to so your application can be processed for the correct admit term.
Additional Degree/Change of Degree Programs
- For current Stanford students only. Relevant university policy can be found in the Bulletin on page 32.
MS program in iCME offers both a terminal degree option as well as a track to the CME-PHD program. Entering the M.S. program is by no means a guaranteed path to a Ph.D. in iCME, and subsequent admission into the Ph.D. program in far from assured. However, very strong students with insufficient background for Ph.D. admission may choose to enter the MS program to gain a thorough understanding of the core courses, to demonstrate academic potential at Stanford, and perhaps to align with a faculty member in research. All of these factors, along with passing the quals, can contribute to a strengthened application to a Ph.D. program in Computational and Mathematical Engineering.
A fee of $50 will be automatically assessed by the Registrar's Office when the offer of admission to MS or Ph.D. is accepted and a new program is opened.
For application deadlines for Additional Degree/Change of Degree, please see the application deadlines section of this site.

Deferral Policy
In general iCME does not allow admission to be deferred to a later quarter. The primary reason being that the core courses sequence begins in the autumn quarter. An admitted student can get special permission to start the program in the summer quarter. A year long deferral may be approved on a case by case review. A Ph.D. student may get a deferral of a year only if they have an external fellowship whose sponsor has agreed to the deferral.
